Vermont could receive $408 million in new federal funding under a transportation bill the U.S. Senate is to consider this week, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., said.
Sanders, in remarks Monday in Burlington, said those federal dollars make up 80 percent of the funding for road and bridge projects in the state, according to a statement from Sanders’ office.
Sanders said there was a backlog in repairs needed to maintain Vermont roads and bridges even before Tropical Storm Irene caused extensive damage last summer. He congratulated Vermont Transportation Secretary Brian Searles and his staff, the Vermont National Guard and private contractors “for their exemplary work responding to the damage caused by Irene.”
Sanders, who as a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee helped draft the transportation bill, said more work remains.
