WASHINGTON — The financial crisis facing the U.S. postal service can be solved in a way that doesn’t slow mail delivery and harm rural America, Sen. Bernie Sanders said during a Monday news conference.
The Vermont independent, joined by Democratic Sens. Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, said the Postmaster General’s response to the crisis is unnecessarily “draconian.”
The service has proposed eliminating Saturday mail, slowing mail delivery and cutting about 220,000 jobs. Also under review are 3,700 post offices, including 15 in Vermont, and 252 mail processing facilities, including two in Vermont, for possible consolidation or closure.
“At a time when the postal service is facing very significant financial problems from email and the Internet, slowing down mail delivery service does not make any sense at all,” Sanders said.
