WASHINGTON — Senate lawmakers are divided on a plan to modernize the U.S. Postal Service, with independent Bernie Sanders and 26 Democrats, including Patrick Leahy, calling for “significant improvements” to bipartisan legislation aimed at keeping the service solvent.
In a Tuesday letter to the Senate panel overseeing the postal service, the 27 senators recommended ways to preserve first-class and Saturday mail delivery, keep rural post offices and mail processing centers from closing, and protect many of the 220,000 jobs the postal service has proposed cutting.
“Everyone understands that the postal service is in the midst of a serious financial crisis that must be addressed,” the senators wrote. “But, we believe that this financial crisis can be solved in a way that does not substantially slow down the delivery of mail and harm rural America.”
